Tchak tchak tchak

A comment on my blog gave me the ideas to write about Geckos…

I have very little experience with them and I don’t really mind them. But some people react to Geckos the way I react with rats…

The most memorable story I have with a Gecko is when I pretended to smash one with the electric racket for mosquitoes. Shiv jumped!! Probably because he was scared of the stain on the wall… As most Indians, he told me Geckos are poisonous.

I am sorry to kill a myth…

They are not…

There are actually about 3 000 species of Lizards in the world and only 2 are poisonous: the Gila monster and Mexican Beaded lizard – which are not found in India!

“Old people believe that even the breath or the urine of the Lizard is poisonous.” I also heard that their skin was. But no. Though I never touched one – what for??

I kind of like Geckos because they eat mosquitoes and cockroaches. They are noisier than their preys, true. By the way, one interpretation of the name is that their call or chirp rather resembles the sound "gecko, gecko" (however, the sound may also be described as "tchak tchak tchak" (often sounded three times in sequence)).

I found a few funny stuff about Geckos.

1. How to get rid of Geckos (apparently they some time colonize a place and then you need to get rid of them): “You can smash a few of them but if you want to round up the entire population then you have to employ some innovative techniques. The best is the one employed by the great military generals of old. Cut off the food supply and the entire town is yours. You can do the same with lizards, destroy their food source and your house will be, well, yours.”

2. About Geckos falling into the food (??): “LIZARD FALLEN BEFORE COOKING IS LESS POISONOUS, WHEREAS FALLEN AFTER COOKING IS MORE POISONOUS.IT CAN CAUSE FOOD POISONING SYMPTOMS PREDOMINANTLY NAUSEA AND VOMITING. HOWEVER DEATH IS VERY RARE.THE LIKELY REASON FOR POISONING IS BY EXCRETA OF LIZARD AND SECRETION FROM SKIN”

3. The Lizard boy (beeeeeeeeerk): There is nothing about him on the net except for his pictures, most probably photoshoped…
